Most Titles Won on Grass
Most Titles Won on Grass
At the top of the Open Era list for most ATP titles won on grass stands Roger Federer, with a record 19 grass-court singles titles, far ahead of every other man in the Open Era. His first title on the surface came at Halle 2003, where he defeated
Nicolas Kiefer 6-1, 6-3, while his final grass-court title also came at Halle 2019, against
David Goffin, giving him a record 10 titles at the same grass-court event. Federerโs total is built around two historic strongholds: Wimbledon, where he won a menโs record eight titles, and Halle, where he won 10, plus one further grass title at Stuttgart 2018.
Behind him stands Pete Sampras, with 10 grass-court titles: his first came at Manchester 1990, where he defeated
Gilad Bloom, and his grass legacy was defined above all by seven Wimbledon titles and two further titles at Queenโs Club.
Then come Jimmy Connors and
Rod Laver, both with nine grass-court titles. Connorsโ grass titles included the Australian Open 1974, Wimbledon 1974 and Wimbledon 1982, the grass-era US Open 1974, three titles at Queenโs Club, plus Manchester and Birmingham; Laverโs biggest grass milestone was Wimbledon 1969, where he defeated
John Newcombe in a four-set final.
A large group follows on eight grass titles, including Novak Djokovic,
Andy Murray,
Lleyton Hewitt,
John McEnroe,
Alex Metreveli,
Ken Rosewall and
Lleyton Hewitt.
In this record, the trophy itself is the milestone: grass offers the shortest season in tennis, so winning repeatedly on the surface requires timing, adaptation and peak execution. Federer set the ceiling at 19, Sampras is the only other man to reach double figures, and Djokovic remains the leading modern active name in the historical grass-title group.
